Mood disorder

What is a mood disorder?

A mood disorder is a mental health condition that affects how you feel emotionally on a regular basis or for an extended period of time. Mood disorders, such as depression, bipolar disorder, or persistent depressive disorder can severely impact one's life and often require treatment.

Depression is characterized by an overwhelming feeling of sadness and hopelessness. A person dealing with depression may lose interest in activities they once enjoyed or have difficulty with daily tasks like work, sleeping, or getting out of bed.

Bipolar disorder, formerly known as manic depression, is characterized by extreme mood swings from mania to depression. During manic episodes, one may have exaggerated self-esteem and bursts of energy, while depressive episodes involve overwhelming sadness.

Persistent depressive disorder (PDD) involves a depressed mood lasting for at least 2 years (1 year for children and teens). PDD often goes undiagnosed because people assume it's just their disposition or temperament to be sad all the time. But PDD significantly impacts one's quality of life long-term.

Major Impacts

Mood disorders often require a combination of medications and psychotherapy. Left untreated, mood disorders can severely impact one's emotional well-being, physical health, relationships, work, and overall quality of life. Those with untreated bipolar disorder are at a higher risk for suicide. That's why it's critical to recognize symptoms and pursue professional treatment options.

Signs and Diagnosis

It's normal to occasionally feel sad, worried, or overwhelmed. Mood disorders are characterized by severe or persistent emotional disturbances that negatively impact daily functioning.
